Suspicion, Anger, and a Gun - The Tragic Trio

Thousands of scenarios - a husband is suspicious of his wife’s activities, he’s angry, he has a gun and he goes to confront her. Time after time the result is someone getting shot and often killed.

The killing of Trayvon Martin is yet another senseless killing due to suspicion, anger, and a gun.

Let’s look at the mindsets in this case aside from all other facts.

Trayvon Martin walked to the store to buy an iced tea and a bag of Skittles for his younger brother. While he was at the store, none of the employees called the police to report him for suspicious or threatening behavior. Trayvon bought the iced tea and candy, left the store walking back to his father’s house, and was talking to a friend on his cell phone - all typical activities in today’s world.

Trayvon Martin’s mindset: It seems to have been nothing out of the ordinary.

George Zimmerman was ‘on watch’ that day - whether officially or in his mind alone. He was watching for anyone he thought was suspicious. We know from the 911 tapes he was angry, or upset at the very least - “the assholes always get away.” He was armed with a 9mm handgun.

George Zimmerman’s mindset: Suspicion, anger, and a gun.

Zimmerman’s mindset was more than ‘an accident looking for a place to happen.’ He was tired of the burglaries and break-ins. He was tired of the thieves getting away. He was vigilant and he was armed. If anyone suspicious appeared in the community he could confront them with no fear because he had a gun.

When Trayvon Martin’s and George Zimmerman’s paths crossed the iced tea and Skittles were no match for suspicion, anger, and a gun.

In this case there might have been a fourth accomplice - racism. Only George Zimmerman would know. In any event, suspicion, anger, and a gun - the tragic trio - had no problem taking another young man’s life.

A clear case of black and white

Today’s logic originating from right wing extremists - cable news network, talk show hosts, GOP presidential candidates, and former GOP presidential candidates:

1) George Zimmerman had the right to defend himself if he felt threatened, including the right to use lethal force - even though he was the one pursuing and chasing with no authority to do that.

2) Trayvon Martin did NOT have the right to defend himself if he felt threatened, including no right to hit George Zimmerman in the nose - even though he was the one being pursued and chased by an unidentified hostile man.

They are right about one thing - there are no gray areas in this case. It’s a clear case of black and white.

Perhaps George Zimmerman’s actions were not motivated by race, but one thing is certain - the Sanford police department’s actions were.

And the right wing extremism exhibited on FOX News continues to defend George Zimmerman while attacking the main stream media and the President of the United States.

Unbelievable. It’s like I fell asleep in 2012 and awakened again in 1963.
